Originally started in Chicago, Illinois in 2012 as a solo project by Sonny Kitsune. First notable release was the Los Anjealous Demo in May ‘13, followed up by Can I Go to Hell Already? In September of the same year, which is also when Kitsune’s friend and longtime musical collaborator Elizabeth Covalt first appeared in the band.
The band released singles continuously until their self titled album The Suburbanists was released on May 1st, 2014, with Kaleb Schuppner joining on banjo.
2016 saw a huge rise in popularity for Suburbanists thanks to the release of their album Drag it Through the Garden and especially the track “Wait Around”, which is the band’s highest performing song. Around this time the band also had a shakeup on members with Slone replacing Schuppner on accompanying strings. Ever-present touring followed the release of the new album as well as a three song appearance on Punk With A Camera.
After a long silence, the band returned with new members Chris Muetro and Absent (it is unclear if this is a stage name or an omission of the members name entirely) along with a new sound. They released their last album Eat From the Tree on August 6, 2021. Now dubbing themselves “Nu Folk” and rejecting what they had perceived was a corruption of the Folk Punk scene, Kitsune laid his complaints to bare in the opening track “Intro (Nu Folk)”
In mid 2023 the band called it quits, with Kitsune removing a bulk of the bands earlier releases, citing their discomfort with their controversial lyrics and themes. The band played its last show on August 5th, 2023 at the Live Wire Lounge in Chicago, performing alongside Rent Strike, Rodeo Boys, and The Last Great Riot.
Kitsune moved to Florida and the remaining members formed the group Made Wrong in 2024
